SPECIAL CHAPTER EXCURSION

Western Maryland Scenic Railroaad

September 10, 2005

Join us as the Rivanna Chapter, National Railway Historical Society, takes a trip on one of the most spectacular steam excursions in the East…the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad! This may be the last year that the train will operate, so we wanted to make sure that Chapter members and friends had one last chance to experience this fabulous trip!

We will travel by chartered motor coach from Charlottesville to Cumberland, Maryland. At the historic 1913 Western Maryland Railway passenger station we will board the train for the 32-mile round-trip to Frostburg.  The former Western Maryland mainline is a mountainous route that will have 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 No. 734 (former Lake Superior and Ishpeming) working hard on the grade (2.8% max. grade). We will pass such famous locations as The Narrows, Helmstetter’s Curve and Brush Tunnel. A narrator will be aboard to provide you with information about the scenery, history, and culture along your route.

There will be a 1 1/2 hour layover in Frostburg where you may enjoy lunch (on your own), watch the engine being turned on a turntable, wander through the Frostburg Shops By The Depot, investigate the shops and restaurants on Frostburg’s Main Street, and visit the Thrasher Carriage Museum.

We will be seated in one of WMSR’s restored coaches. Most coach seats are located by large windows and seat two on either side of the aisle. Aboard the train there is a gift shop and snack bar converted from a baggage car.

So please mark your calendars and send in your reservation form now!
